Getting your dog’s attention: Teaching the “Watch” command.

One of the most useful commands I have ever learned to use is the “watch” command. In obedience it is so important because if your dog does not keep it’s eyes on you, it will miss a command or signal.
The easiest way to introduce this command is with food. I use Biljac Minis to train with and to reinforce this exercise. Have your dog sitting in the heel position or facing you. Give your dog the stay command and reward them, verbally or with food. Then take a small treat, put it up by your eye and say “Name, Watch.” If the dog meets your eye, give the treat. If not, show the dog who is remaining in sit/stay the treat and put it back up near your eye and repeat the command.
As with all commands, it takes a few days for the dog to get solid. Once it does, you will not need the treat. The watch will be the precursor to another command. For instance, I will say, “Hershey, watch…heel” and I take off. Or “Hershey, watch…fetch it.’ She knows to give her attention and wait for the command when she hears “watch”.
It is fun to play with this command, like from across the room, to get your dog’s attention. But do not abuse it. If no treat is given, and no command to follow, the conditioning will be that “watch” is nothing special to obey, there is nothing following.
Take the time to teach your dog “Watch”, it will help you capture your dog’s attention and strengthen the bond between you.
