Dogs and Snow
With the record breaking 14 inches of snow we had in the Dallas/Fort Worth area a couple of days ago, I learned something new. My dogs love snow.
In Texas, snow is not something dogs find commonplace, it is a treasured event. The day after we experienced this out of the ordinary dump of the powdery stuff, we lost electricity. What this did is force the whole family outside to pickup limbs, clear paths and PLAY.
While the kids made a snowman, a snow fort and snow cream to eat, the dogs were like tireless puppies again, even the older one with the bad hip. They ran. They romped. They chased. They dug. They jumped out on each other. They retrieved (so many times, my shoulder was sore the next day). They did not seem to feel the cold or the damp or ever tire of these games.
I hid treats in the snow and they “found them.” They chased the poor birds we feed at the porch. This went on for hours solid. They then followed us around, hung out by the fire pit, but never laid by the door in an effort to go in.
So at the days end, I reflected back and smiled at their fun and happiness and gave them a little extra BilJac in their bowls and was thankful for the unusual weather and a day of fun.
