Timing the Reward

IMG 0218A Small 150x150 Timing the RewardWhen we do our jobs correctly, we expect to be paid on time. It is no different for our canine companions. When training your dog using positive reinforcement, timing is critical for quick conditioning to take place.

For example, when working with your dog to achieve the sit command, the handler says sit and the dog sits. Within one or two seconds either the food reward and/or the verbal praise needs to occur. You are leaving no doubt in your dog’s mind that he executed the command correctly. If you wait too long, the dog will be unsure about what he is being rewarded for. This will take longer for the command to become solid.

An even quicker way to reward and a great incentive to accomplish the command quickly and correctly is to show your dog the food reward and then execute the command. Immediately give the reward if it is done correctly. If not, say the command again, showing the food and wait for the result. You will find that this way of training is very effective.

So pay your dog like you want to be paid. When the job is done right, pay up, quickly!
