The Way Dogs Think: Pack Mentality
Before humans came into the lives of dogs, dogs behaved very much like the modern day wolf. They functioned in packs. A pack is a group of dogs with a leader, the Alpha. Throughout the life of the dog, several of the pack members will challenge for this position. This is an innate behavior.
This is also something that fully exists in each dog today. What we must realize is that we have to be Alpha. We have to be in charge of our dog. And like all good and respected leaders, we have to be fair and provide for those under us.
It seems to be prevalent in today’s society is people treating dogs like spoiled children. Baby talk, carrying your dog, dressing the dog and allowing cute, but undisciplined behavior is not doing your dog any favors. A dog wants to be a dog, like he was created to be.
Dogs need us to be a leader. If you do not provide that for them then they will challenge you and that is where “dog problems” stem. You may recognize some of these problems: pulling on the leash, barking in your presence, eating off of your table or counter tops, not coming when called, etc. So we must take responsibility and realize that it is not a “dog problem”, but a “human problem” where we are not recognizing what the dog is requiring and not providing it.
Alpha is harder for some of us than others, depending on personality. If you care about the mental stability of your dog, trying to do this to the best of your ability is in your dog’s best interest.
Entering into a training program where you learn to teach your dogs commands, teach him to walk properly on a leash is a great start. Smaller steps are setting boundaries and rules in the home and sticking to them. Do not worry about “hurting your dog’s feelings”. Remember that they thrive on this leadership. What you will get in return is a balanced dog and less problems, everyone involved is happier.
